Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped
- Edible gold leaf for decoration
- Gold dust for ganache
- Sparklers for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix on medium speed for 2 minutes until well combined.
- Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- For the ganache, heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan until it just begins to simmer. Pour over the chopped dark chocolate and let sit for 5 minutes. Stir until smooth. Add gold dust to the ganache and mix well.
- Once the cakes are cooled, place one layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of ganache over the top. Repeat with the second layer, then place the third layer on top.
- Cover the entire cake with the remaining ganache, smoothing the edges. Decorate with edible gold leaf as desired.
- Before serving, insert sparklers into the top of the cake for a dramatic presentation, and enjoy!
