Want your patio to be a space you actually use? The key is to outfit it with comfortable patio furniture. The ideal outdoor space is as welcoming and relaxing as your indoor space.

3 Secrets to Buying Comfortable Patio Furniture

Make no mistake about it, if your patio furniture is uncomfortable, you’re not going to use it. And you’re certainly not going to invite friends and family for an outdoor party.

1. Measure Your Space

Selecting comfortable patio furniture is all well and dandy, but if it’s too big for your space or so small it doesn’t provide enough seating, it makes it pretty hard to use. Before you start shopping, the first step should always be to measure your space.

As a rule of thumb, you want to allow for roughly 30 inches around your furniture to provide a walking path. Remember, rules are meant to be broken. For example, if you’re shopping for comfortable patio furniture for small spaces, you might consider reducing your walking pathway to allow for a larger piece or more seating.

The key is to make sure you’re considering how people will navigate your layout. It doesn’t do any good to have an overstuffed outdoor sectional that guests can only sit on by crawling over the back.

2. Don’t Overlook the ‘Sit Test’

There is no replacement for actually sitting in your patio furniture before you buy. And we’re not just talking sitting for a minute or two. We’re talking about bringing a book and sitting for 10-15 minutes.

Just like shopping for a mattress, you need to give your body adequate time to see if your patio furniture will be comfortable for a long sit. We’ve found that the 10-15 minute mark offers a good barometer to see if there are any places where furniture pinches, bulges or causes general discomfort.

This is one of the reasons that we strongly recommend shopping for your patio furniture in person.

3. Consider How You Want to USE Your Patio Furniture

Choosing the most comfortable outdoor furniture isn’t a one-size fits all solution, because not all

patio furniture is designed for every use. Oversized outdoor sectionals are typically intended for lounging, while outdoor dining tables are better suited for an alfresco dinner.

How to Enjoy Your Patio During the Fall & Winter

Upgrading your patio furniture is one thing. Making your outdoor space a multi-season destination is another. If you want to enjoy your patio during the fall and winter, it’s essential that you consider how you and your guests will stay warm.

Add a Fire Pit

Fire pits are one of the best ways to add warmth and ambiance to your backyard. Since the dawn of time, an open flame has helped bring people together. We’re particularly fans of fire pits that double as tabletops, adding extra functionality to your patio.

Use Outdoor Heaters

Outdoor heaters are another exceptional way to warm up your patio. There are a variety of solutions which range from built-in heaters that are mounted to an…
